VITRINA EXHIBITIONS is a pilot project focused on the community of creatives and visual artists in Aruba. Our goal is to offer a space for local artists to present their work and interesting activities for the creative community of Aruba. We invited three local artists to show some of their existing works in one of the windows of Wolff & Co. Studio, located on the third floor of Royal Plaza. This vitrine has been refurbished as an exhibition space where anyone can pass by and admire the works at any time of the day. Each exhibition will last 1 month and will be accompanied by relevant activities related to the artist's practice. The exhibitions will take place in July, September, and November of 2023.

VITRINA EXHIBITIONS was born out of the desire of Wolff & Co. Studio to open its space to other local creatives. Ken Wolff elaborates that the studio was born with the vision of being a space for creatives by creatives. In addition, our projects have always had as their goal the development of the artistic practice of local visual artists. This is achieved by offering a payment (artist fee) for the artistic work as well as creating educational and academic material about these local practices, in our language.

VITRINA EXHIBITIONS is a collaboration between Plataforma Aruba and Wolff & Co. Studio with the support of the Mondriaan Fund.

Our third and last VITRINA EXHIBITION of 2023 showcases the drawings of local artist Rudyo Leysner, an illustrator who uses the medium of drawing to explore his personal surroundings. His drawings and paintings combine realism with a reimagining of it to reveal the different layers of our human experience.

From a young age, Rudyo was fascinated by the act of drawing on different surfaces, especially characters from video games. Later on, the art of tattooing captured his attention, and he became fascinated with designing tattoos for his friends. Another source of inspiration for Rudyo is the works of artists such as Salvador Dali, Rene Magritte, Vincent Van Gogh, Pavel Tchelitchew, and Gustav Klimt. These artists have unique styles that reflect their philosophies of life and their perspectives on the world. Just like these artists, Rudyo uses themes and techniques from his own experiences to shape his identity and artistic style.

In the exhibition ‘SINTI BO NA CAS’ Rudyo presents some of his work depicting his immediate family. These drawings were not created with the intention of being exhibited but rather as a documentation of their cherished moments, an expression of the value they hold. With "SINTI BO NA CAS," we want to reflect on the role that our individual family experiences play in the cultural tapestry of our community.

Portraits have always been an important part of the tradition of painting and drawing. Before the discovery of photography, members of the high society would document themselves and their importance through commissioned portraits, whether in the form of painting, drawing, or sculpture. For local artist Rudyo Leysner, there is nothing more satisfying than seeing the reaction of the subject of the portrait when they recognize themselves in the drawing on paper.

To conclude our VITRINA EXHIBITIONS 2023 project, we offered a workshop intending to give an impression of the drawing and portrait process. The participants registered for a lesson with a live model under the guidance of the artist. The workshop took place on October 26, 2023.

ENGLISH

Our second VITRINA EXHIBITION showcases the work of Irvin Aguilar, a local visual artist and graphic designer. Aguilar uses the medium of printmaking to explore artmaking’s own process and highlight the labor behind the profession of an artist.

The installation ALKIMIA, is an invitation to step into the atelier of the artist, an intimate space of production, and his ‘ritual’ of transforming materials into an artwork. The title of the exhibition and the piece allude to these capabilities of transformation. Just like an alchemist transforms common materials into precious things, so does an artist transform concepts, questions, and materials into works of art. Aguilar’s works may sometimes appear incomplete or ‘below the standards of classical print-making’ but in reality, they reveal the process of transformation.

The mask he wears is a mode of protection and changes him into THE print-maker,  where he himself, as a person, becomes only an instrument for the production of the work. In a way, it touches upon the anonymity of artists as can be seen in for example street graffiti, where the focus lies on the work and not who the artist is. As such, it can be seen as opening the discussion about the complexities of the anonymity, intentional or not, of an artist.

The performance will take place on the opening night only, after which the installation will remain on view until the 8th of October.

ENGLISH

Ceramics is one of the oldest and most versatile artistic mediums. This material has been associated with handicrafts and practical objects, but in recent years we can see this medium being used more and more in fine arts.

Many artists love its texture, the direct contact, and how they can't predict the final result of this material.

In this talk, which took place on July 27, 2023, the guests went deeper into this material, what involves working with clay, and how the properties of ceramics influence their artistic practice.

Guests: Trudy Lampe, Velvet Zoe Ramos, and Anthony Croes.
